Portfolio

Over the past five years in higher education, museums, and cultural institutions, I have helped produce a variety of projects to deepen public and scholarly engagement with digital materials. This portfolio shares a sampling of my current and past projects, from tools to exhibitions.

Current Projects

Audubon in Action: Creative Approaches to Data

Project Manager/Developer • University of Pennsylvania Libraries • 2022-present

Experiment with the latest project, Birds of Philadelphia, which uses high-resolution images of Audubon’s plates from The Birds of America alongside crowdsourced observation data to consider the depiction of wildlife data through visual, aural, and interactive components.

SNL Coefficient

Developer/Co-Creator • Personal Project • 2021-present

This repository contains all the scripts and data for the SNL Coefficient project. This project attempts to determine a value for cast and crew members’ association with Saturday Night Live, to then determine how closely associated a particular media property is with the show.

Collections as Data

Project Manager/Developer • University of Pennsylvania Libraries • 2021-present

These notebooks contain tutorials and examples designed to facilitate engagement with library collections data available in Colenda, while learning about Python as a tool for data manipulation.

Sabato Morais Digital Repository

Project Manager/Developer • University of Pennsylvania Libraries • 2019-

The Sabato Morais Digital Repository is a searchable database that performs full-text searching of correspondence and other papers in the Sabato Morais Papers, displaying the images of retrieved documents alongside their encoded transcription.

Digital Second Edition of Judaica Americana

Project Manager/Project Developer • University of Pennsylvania Libraries • 2019-2020

The digital second edition of Judaica Americana makes searchable the 9,000 entries in the print edition. Taken as a whole, Singerman’s bibliography provides extensive and authoritative documentation of American Jewish communal activity and growth before 1901.

Contingent Magazine

Site Manager • Contingent Magazine • 2019-

At Contingent Magazine, we believe that history is for everyone, that every kind of history is worthwhile, and that historians should be paid for their work.

Scribes of the Cairo Geniza

Project Manager • University of Pennsylvania Libraries • 2019-present

Scribes of the Cairo Geniza aims to sort and transcribe Cairo Geniza fragments using new technological approaches in partnership with a community of citizen humanists using the Zooniverse platform.

Twitter Bots

Botmaker • Independent • 2016-2018

I manage some Twitter bots, several related to the Mountain Goats, an American band formed in Claremont, California, by singer-songwriter John Darnielle.

Past Projects

Senate Staff Office Exhibition Apps

Technical Lead • Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate • 2019-2019

I considered how technology could amplify narratives about the Kennedy family, the Senator’s work in the Senate, and current issues in the US government.

Mapping Violence

Researcher and Collaborator • Brown University • 2017-2018

Mapping Violence recovers lost and obscured cases of racial violence in Texas from 1900 to 1930, a period of now largely forgotten bloodshed. Making these histories public is a crucial step towards reckoning with the long legacies of violence.

Visualizing the Crystal Palace

Project Assistant • University of Pennsylvania Libraries • 2016-2017

The New York Crystal Palace exposition was America’s first world’s fair. Exhibitors from around the world showed off their latest machinery, consumer products, and raw materials. This tool allows you to list the items on display based on their country of origin, and item type (called a “class” in the catalog).

Exhibitions

Lead Curator • University of Pennsylvania Libraries • 2022

Forthcoming

Wheelhouse Technology from Sounding Leads to Satellites

Researcher • New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center • 2019

Over the past century, new technologies have allowed New Bedford’s fleet to arrive on the grounds faster, fish safer, and communicate more easily. But at what cost? This exhibit considers the evolution and impact of technological change on the industry, the community, and the fish. In addition to considering the science behind devices such as EPIRB, SONAR, and LORAN, the exhibit and programs will consider topics such as Technology & Privacy, Dependence on Technology, and Technology & Sustainability.

2018 U.S. Senate Election Map

Technical Lead • Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate • 2018

This technology-driven projected display immersed visitors in the 2018 U.S. Senate Elections, where at total of 35 seats are up for election. Of the 35 seats up for election, 23 are held by Democrats, 8 by Republicans, and 2 by Independents. Projected onto the institute’s exhibit hall walls and available on tablets, visitors explore the races allowing the candidates and races in each of the 33 states, and learned about how the balance of power shifts between political parties each election.

Senate Staff Office

Technical Lead • Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate • 2018

The Senate Staff Office exhibit features the exemplary work of Senator Kennedy’s staff, and what is involved in working in a United States Senator’s office. Through a mixture of hands-on activities, video features, and office artifacts, visitors have the opportunity to hear firsthand stories from Senator Edward M. Kennedy’s staff and take on the role of those assigned with completing daily Senate office responsibilities. The interactive exhibit highlights some of the key roles in the Washington, D.C. office and the home state office, including the jobs of scheduler, chief of staff, legislative assistant, and press secretary.
